Established in 1912, Western
Costume Company outdates any Hollywood studio or production company. It was
founded by L.L. Burns, who settled in Los Angeles after many years of traveling
west as an Indian trader. Having accumulated hundreds of Indian artifacts,
weapons, costumes and jewelry pieces, Burns began renting Indian costumes to a
number of western filmmakers and eventually added second-hand clothing of all
types to augment his stock. He then bought out his only competition. From its
humble beginnings, Western grew into an industry staple by costuming virtually
every major star of the teens and twenties. Western’s “nerve center” – the
research library – was founded in the early 1920’s, an industry-first,
supplying information for art directors as well as costume designers. Western
survived its displacement by the giant studio wardrobe departments, the
Depression and a succession of management changes to continue a tradition of
costuming across all entertainment mediums. In early 1992, Costumer Eddie Marks
became president, and the company has pressed forward, adding new costumes, a
multitude of uniforms, and several important designer collections. Marks is now
co-owner with Bill Haber who has owned the company since 1989. Haber, a
co-founder of CAA and one of the producers of the Broadway hit “Monty Python’s
Spamalot,” also serves as assistant to the president of Save the Children.
